Radiology
RadiologyAt St. Francis Hospital, our radiologists focus on blending the latest radiological technology with the highest standard of patient care possible to create and interpret images of inside the body. That's because we understand how important it is for our patients to get fast and accurate results. We also understand that many patients may be anxious about having some of these tests performed, so we go the extra mile to make sure our patients are at ease and know what to expect each and every step of the way.
Our Radiology Department performs over 30,000 diagnostic procedures each year and is all digital with our newly Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The PACS system is capable of storing, retrieving, transporting, displaying and printing medical images from X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, Ultrasounds and Nuclear Medicine. It also helps manage electronic patient information such as medical histories, radiologists' reports and other documents. All radiology exams online are distributed online - allowing those with proper privileges to view exams and reports over the Internet almost instantly from all over the world! Common diagnostic exams performed at St. Francis Hospital include:
Digital X-rays: Using our recently installed Kodak CR (Computerized Radiography) units, we have replaced film x-rays with digital x-rays to take images of the extremities, pelvis, head/face, ribs and shoulder/clavicle. Barium exams of the stomach, small bowel and colon are also available.
MRIs: By combining radiofrequency waves with a strong magnetic field, our 1.5 Tesla MRI unit creates remarkably clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. This is valuable for diagnosing a broad range of conditions including cancer, hear and vascular disease, stroke and joint musculoskeletal disorders.
Music and Movies during an MRI? Our NEW MRI GOGGLES allow patients to relax by blocking out the sights and sounds of the machine while watching television shows or movies of their choice! This calming virtual atmosphere is as large as a 62-inch big screen and is a great tool for helping pass the time during the test.
CAT Scans: Using an x-ray generating device that rotates around your body, our our brand new Siemens 40 row Defenition series scanner brings the newest ct techology available to our hospital. A CT unit creates cross-sectional images (like slices) of inside your body with a great level of precision.
Nuclear Medicine: Nuclear medicine uses radioactive substances to image the body and treat disease. Treating cancer with radiation therapy is one aspect of nuclear medicine. It also provides doctors with another way to look inside the human body through the use of computer detectors and radioactive substances.
Ultrasounds: Ultrasounds is an established and effective diagnostic modality that uses high frequency ultrasound waves to produce images. Ultrasound is used for diagnosis, management and follow-up in many areas throughout the body, however it is particularly idea for obstetric, gynecologic and pediatric imaging. This technology is also used for rapid diagnosis of medical, surgical, obstetrical and gynecologic emergencies.
Mammograms: Mammograms create black and white x-rays of the breast used to detect tumor and other abnormalities in breast tissues. Experts disagree on the exact age and frequency women should get regular mammograms. It's important to discuss your health with your doctor, finding a schedule that best fits you.
Diagnostic exams are available to both inpatient and outpatient visitors as well as any emergency services. While many outpatient exams can be performed on a "walk in" basis, there are often exams that require a fasting period prior to the test and a radiologist be present for the exam. For this reason, it is always best to call the Radiology Department at (217) 324-8555 to find out if an appointment is needed. All radiology exams require a written or phoned-in order from your physician.
